Types of correlation
Positive: when both variables go up or down together
Negative: when one increases, the other decreases
Zero correlation
difference between experiment & correlation
experiment: researcger controls/manipulates IV to test effect on DV
correlation: no manipulation, no cause-and-effect
EVAL
strengths:
1. precise & quantifiable measure of the relation between 2 variables. suggest future research because of interesting patterns/strong relation.
2. not time nor economically consuming - no controlled env, secondary data can be used
EVAL
Limitations:
1. no reason for correlation, only how. no manipulation. we don;t know what co-variable causes other to change.
2. other untested variable causing change? (INTERVENING VARIABLE)
3. easy to misuse/misinterpret. can be portrayed as causal when they’re not
