Object Recognition
The process of discerning distinct objects from the visual field and matching them to information stored in a database.
View-Based Approach
A method for object recognition where a template is created as a memory representation of previously encountered objects.
Description-Based Approach
A method of recognizing objects by breaking down images into simpler shapes, known as geons, and determining the relationships among them.
Geons
Basic 3D shapes that comprise all objects used in the recognition-by-components theory.
Template Matching
A view-based recognition approach that involves comparing current visual input with stored templates.
Holistic Match
A full and comprehensive match between a visual input and a template that results in object recognition.
RBC (Recognition-by-Components)
A theory that outlines how objects are recognized by identifying basic shapes (geons) and their spatial arrangements.
Edge Identification
A technique used to determine the edges of shapes, crucial for identifying geons in objects.
View Invariant
The principle that relationships among edges of the geons remain visible from different viewpoints.
Spatial Arrangement
The organization and layout of geons in relation to one another, essential for object recognition.
Limitations of View-Based Approach
Challenges such as dealing with objects that cannot be 100% matched or recognized from different orientations.
Application of RBC
The use of geon-based recognition in artistic training to simplify complex images into basic shapes.
Recognition Time
The duration it takes to recognize an object, which may depend on the orientation of the object.
Working Memory (WM)
A form of memory that must actively hold relevant information in the recognition process.
Long-Term Memory (LTM)
The stored information that must be activated to aid in visual object recognition.
Orientation Influence
The concept that the orientation of an object can impact the recognition time and process.
