What is an ionic bond?
A strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions formed by the transfer of electrons from a metal to a non-metal.
Why do ionic compounds have high melting points?
Because it requires a significant amount of energy to break the numerous strong electrostatic forces holding the giant ionic lattice together.
Why can't solid ionic compounds conduct electricity?
Because the ions are fixed in a rigid lattice structure and are not free to move and carry charge.
What is the charge of a sulfate ion?
2- (SO4 2-)
When writing the formula for calcium hydroxide, why do we use brackets like Ca(OH)2?
To show that the subscript applies to the entire polyatomic ion (two hydroxide units), rather than just the last atom.
What is the charge of an ammonium ion?
1+ (NH4+)
