Diversity in the workplace
Having a workforce inclusive of different backgrounds and national origins, fostering a sense of belonging.
Surface-level diversity
Differences in easily perceived characteristics, such as gender, race, ethnicity, age, or disability, that may activate stereotypes.
Deep-level diversity
Differences in values, personality, and work preferences that become more important for determining similarity as people get to know each other better.
Stereotyping
Judging someone based on our perception of the group to which they belong.
Stereotype threat
The degree to which we internally agree with negative stereotyped perceptions of our groups.
Discrimination
Making judgments about individuals based on stereotypes.
Discriminatory policies
Actions taken by representatives of an organization that deny equal opportunity to perform.
Sexual harassment
Unwanted sexual advances and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.
Intimidation
Overt threats or bullying directed at members.
Mockery
Jokes or negative stereotypes.
Exclusion
Excluding certain people from job opportunities.
Incivility
Disrespectful treatment, including behaving in an aggressive manner.
Biographical characteristics
Age, gender, race, and disability are some of the most obvious ways employees differ.
Age
The length of time that a person has lived.
Sex
Refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define humans as female or male.
Race
Heritage people use to identify themselves.
Ethnicity
Additional set of cultural characteristics that often overlaps with race.
Positive diversity climate
An environment of inclusiveness and acceptance of diversity in an organization.
Disabilities
Workplace policies regarding individuals with physical or mental disabilities vary.
Hidden disabilities
Disabilities that are not easily visible, such as sensory disabilities, chronic illness, or psychological challenges.
Tenure
The period of time a person holds a position or office.
Sexual orientation and identity
Umbrella term for people whose gender identity and/or expression is different from cultural expectations based on assigned sex at birth.
Cultural identity
Distinct identities of people or groups in cultural or subcultural categories and social groups.
Ability
An individual's current capacity to perform tasks in a job, consisting of intellectual and physical factors.
General Mental Ability (GMA)
Overall factor of intelligence, including specific intellectual ability dimensions.
Intellectual Abilities
Abilities needed for mental activities such as thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving.
Number Aptitude
Ability to do speedy arithmetic.
Verbal Comprehension
Ability to understand what is read or heard and the relationships of words to each other.
Perceptual Speed
Ability to identify visual similarities.
Inductive Reasoning
Ability to identify logical sequences.
Deductive Reasoning
Ability to use logic and assess the implications of an argument.
Spatial Visualization
Ability to imagine how an object would look if its position in space changes.
Memory
Ability to retain and recall past experiences.
Dynamic Strength
Ability to exert muscular force repeatedly or continuously over time.
Static Strength
Ability to exert force against external objects.
Explosive Strength
Ability to expend maximum energy in one or a series of explosive acts.
Extent Flexibility
Ability to move the trunk and back muscles as far as possible.
Dynamic Flexibility
Ability to make rapid, repeated flexing movements.
Body Coordination
Ability to coordinate the simultaneous actions of different parts of the body.
Balance
Ability to maintain equilibrium despite forces pulling off balance.
Stamina
Ability to continue maximum effort requiring prolonged effort over time.
