What is an atom
Smallest particle of an element
What is an element?
A substance made of only one type of atom
What is a compound?
2 or more elements chemically combined
Why cant elements be broken down chemically
Because they contain only one type of atom
What is a molecule?
two or more atoms joined together
How are compounds different from mixtures
Compounds are chemically bonded, mixtures are not
What determines the properties of an element
The type of atoms it contains
Why do elements have different properties
Because they contain different atoms
What are physical properties?
Characteristics that can be observed without chemical change
What are chemical properties?
how a substance reacts with other substances
What are metals?
Elements that conduct heat and electricity well
What are typical properties of metals
Conductive,shiny,strong,malleable
What does malleable mean?
can be hammered into shape
What does ductile mean
can be drawn into wires
Why do metals conduct electricity?
Because they have free moving electrons
What are molecular elements
Elements made of molecules instead of single atoms
Give examples of molecular elements
Oxygen(O2),Hydrogen(H2),Nitrogen (N2)
Why are molecular elements stable
Atoms bond together to form stable molecules
What are common metallic elements
Iron,copper,aluminium
What are common non-metals
Oxygen,carbon,hydrogen
What is the periodic table
A table showing all elements arranged by properties
How are compounds formed
When elements chemically react and bond
Why do compounds have different properties from elements
Because atoms rearrange during chemical reactions
Give an example of compound formation
Hydrogen+Oxygen➡️water
What is a chemical bond
Force holding atoms together
What is a chemical formula
Shows the elements in a compound and their ratios
What does H2O mean
2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom
What does CO2 mean
1 carbon atom and 2 oxygen atoms
What do numbers in formulas represent
Number of atoms
What is a compound name
Name describing elements in a compound
What does oxide mean
Compound containing oxygen
Example of oxide
Carbon dioxide
What does chloride mean
Compound containing chlorine
What happens during a chemical reaction
Atoms rearrange to form new substances
Are atoms destroyed in chemical reactions
No they are rearranged
What is conserved in chemical reactions
mass is conserved, energy is transferred but overall conserved
Why is mass conserved
Because atoms are not created or destroyed
