Consumer Protection
The protection of consumers against wrong practices of sellers in the market.
Consumer Awareness
Consumer consciousness towards his or her rights and duties.
Duplicate Articles
The act of producers faking or duplicating goods in the name of genuine goods, also known as an act of deception.
Adulteration
The practice of mixing inferior quality goods with superior quality goods, such as mixing brick powder with red chilli powder.
Artificial Scarcity
A situation where traders resort to hoarding to create a lack of supply and later sell goods at a higher price.
COPRA
The Consumer Protection Act of 1986, which was replaced in 2019 and initially came into force on 1st July 1987 to provide quick redress of grievances.
National Consumer Commission
The apex court under the Consumer Protection Act which functions at Delhi.
District Forum
The consumer court operating at the district level, also known as the District Consumer Court.
Right to be Informed
The consumer's legal right to know about the quality, quantity, purity, standard, and price of a product.
Right to seek Redressal
The right to seek remedies against unfair trade practices and receive compensation depending on the degree of damage.
Right to Safety
The right to be protected against the marketing of goods and services that are hazardous to life and property.
Food Adulteration
The act of adding chemical substances to food which degrades its quality, such as adding water to milk or animal fats to ghee.
RTI Act, 2005
An act that gives citizens of India access to records of the central and state government.
Public Distribution Service (PDS)
An administrative measure where food grains procured by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) are distributed through government regulated fair price shops.
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
The body responsible for the standardization of industrial and consumer goods, formerly known as the Indian Standards Institution (ISI).
AGMARK
A standardization mark meant specifically for agricultural products.
FSSAI
The mark used under the Food and Safety Standards Act, 2006 to inform customers about the quality certification of packaged food products.
Hallmark
A government-introduced standard for Gold Jewellery Certification.
ECOMARK
A certification mark issued by the BIS to identify products that have a lower environmental impact than similar products.
