He rejects the priests’ messages/ refused to kneel down and pray. He realizes the priest is part of a prisoner’s plan Aswell.

Were t here no Kenyans who could write sermons? Why hadn't he at least paid homage to Kenya's spiritual independence by bringing into prison sermons by the likes of Reverend John Gatu and  Bishop Heny Okullu, men whose liberal sincerity and concern had led them to a measure of patriotism

He means that despite gaining independence, it did not get rid pf colonial system of powers. They still face repression, exploitation, foreign control and fear.
