Quadratic Function
A polynomial function of degree 2, typically in the form y=ax2+bx+c.
Vertex
The point where the parabola changes direction, given as (h, k) in vertex form.
Axis of Symmetry
A vertical line that divides the parabola into two mirror images, given by the equation x=h.
Discriminant
The part of the quadratic formula under the square root sign, calculated as D=b2−4ac, used to determine the nature of the roots.
Roots
The values of x that make the quadratic equation equal to zero; can be real or complex.
Standard Form of a Quadratic
The form of a quadratic equation expressed as y=ax2+bx+c.
Factored Form of a Quadratic
The form of the quadratic expressed as y=a(x−r1)(x−r2) where r1 and r2 are the roots.
X-intercepts
Points on the graph where the parabola crosses the x-axis, found by setting y=0.
Y-intercept
The point on the graph where the parabola crosses the y-axis, found by evaluating the function at x=0.
Parabola Opening Direction
Indicates whether the parabola opens upwards (minimum) or downwards (maximum), determined by the sign of coefficient a in the quadratic equation.
