Who and when discovered vaccines
Edward Genner in 1796
What pathogens are vaccines uses to prevent?
Mostly viruses
Antigen=
A specific site on the pathogen
Antibodies=
What your body makes to attach to the antigens, disabling the pathogen
Creating antibodies takes time because:
Your body has to match the correct antibody to the correct antigen - like a lock and key
Sights an antibody is working:
Coughing
Sneezing
Fever
Adaptive immunity:
Cells create memories of what invaders look like and how to fight them
Vaccines=
Preparing your body to fight off diseases before you get infected
Live attenuated vacccine:
Made up of a weaker or inactive version of the pathogen itself
Inactive vaccine:
Made up of a version of the pathogen that has been killed
Why do we use vaccines?
Low risk
Nuilds up immunity and memory cells
Vaccination side effects:
Symptoms of the actual illness
Subunit vaccine=
Contains only the antigen from the pathogen
Vaccines lead to
Gained immunity
Immunity=
When your body destroys the pathogen before it makes you ill or “symptomatic”
