embedded sentences
clauses placed within the main clause in a sentence. They do not make sense as stand-alone sentences, unlike main clauses.

independent clause
A group of words that contains a subject, a verb, and expresses a complete thought. Can stand by itself.
EX: Jim studied in the Sweet Shop for his chemistry quiz.
dependent clause
a group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought. It cannot stand alone.
