Indirect Speech
Reporting what someone has said or written, often involving a change of tenses.
Backshift
A change in tense when the reporting verb is in the past; for instance, present becomes past.
To-Infinitive
Used to report commands, requests, and advice.
Conditional Sentences
Sentences that express conditions and consequences, often structured with an 'if' clause and a main clause.
Type 1 Conditional
Refers to present or future situations; uses simple present in the 'if' clause and will or modals in the main clause.
Type 2 Conditional
Refers to unreal present or future situations; uses simple past in the 'if' clause and would or modals in the main clause.
Type 3 Conditional
Refers to unreal past situations; uses past perfect in the 'if' clause and would have or modals with past participles in the main clause.
Defining Relative Clauses
Clauses that provide essential information about the noun they modify, introduced by relative pronouns like who, that, which.
Present Perfect
A verb tense used to indicate actions that occurred at an unspecified time in the past.
Past Perfect
A verb tense used to indicate actions that were completed before a certain point in the past.
