abrasive
Showing little concern for the feelings of others; harsh or rough in manner.
alkaline
Having a pH greater than 7; basic as opposed to acidic.
alchemist
A person who practices the medieval forerunner of chemistry, particularly the attempt to turn base metals into gold.
aphasia
A loss of ability to understand or express speech, caused by brain damage.
artesian
Relating to a well where water rises under pressure from an underground aquifer.
assimilate
To take in and fully understand information, ideas, or culture.
boloney
Nonsensical talk or foolishness.
chasm
A deep fissure in the earth, rock, or another surface; a profound difference between people.
diaspora
The dispersion or spread of any people from their original homeland.
excision
The act or procedure of removing something, such as an organ or a part of the body, by cutting it out.
geode
A small cavity in rock lined with crystals or other mineral matter.
immutable
Unchanging over time or unable to be changed.
inertia
A property of matter by which it continues in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless changed by an external force.
karyotype
The number and visual appearance of the chromosomes in the cell nuclei of an organism or species.
omniscient
Knowing everything; having infinite awareness and understanding.
rhapsody
An effusively enthusiastic or ecstatic expression of feeling.
sycophant
A person who acts obsequiously toward someone important in order to gain advantage.
tenacity
The quality or fact of being very determined; determination.
velocity
The speed of something in a given direction, often expressed by the formula v=timedistance.
zamboni
A machine used to resurface the ice on an ice rink.
abominable
Causing moral revulsion; very bad or unpleasant.
algorithm
A process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations.
amygdala
An almond-shaped mass of gray matter in the cerebral hemisphere, involved with the experiencing of emotions.
carbohydrates
Biomolecules consisting of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms, typically in a ratio of 2:1.
centrifugal
Moving or tending to move away from a center.
electromagnetic
Relating to the interrelation of electric currents or fields and magnetic fields.
epiphany
A moment of sudden and great revelation or realization.
fahrenheit
A scale of temperature in which water freezes at 32o and boils at 212o under standard conditions.
filibuster
A prolonged speech that obstructs progress in a legislative assembly.
geriatrics
The branch of medicine or social science dealing with the health and care of old people.
hieroglyphic
Writing consisting of pictures or symbols representing words, syllables, or sounds.
iconoclast
A person who attacks settled beliefs or institutions.
juxtapose
To place close together or side by side for comparison or contrast.
mitochondria
Cellular organelles responsible for energy production through respiration.
narcissism
Excessive interest in or admiration of oneself.
octahedron
A three-dimensional shape having eight plane faces.
panacea
A solution or remedy for all difficulties or diseases.
triceratops
A large herbivorous dinosaur characterized by three horns and a bony neck frill.
viscosity
The state of being thick, sticky, and semi-fluid in consistency.
zygote
A diploid cell resulting from the fusion of two haploid gametes.
