Eye Gaze Access
An access method that allows an individual to control a speech-generating device using eye movement, often considered for individuals with significant motor impairments.
Reduced Visual Complexity
A strategy to improve eye gaze accuracy by using fewer symbols on the screen, larger icons, high contrast backgrounds, and reduced page clutter.
Wait Time
A pause of 5ext−−10+extseconds allowed for processing, motor planning, and initiation before assuming a student is not responding.
Calibration
The process of aligning eye movement with screen selection, which may require adjustment of seating position, head alignment, or glare reduction.
Switch Access
An access method used when direct touch is not reliable, involving a cursor moving through options until the user activates a switch.
Scanning Types
Methods of navigating options including automatic scanning, step scanning, and inverse scanning.
Cause and Effect
The foundational skill of understanding that activating something causes something to happen, which is necessary for difficult tasks like scanning.
Direct Selection
The most common AAC access method requiring finger isolation, range of motion, endurance, and visual targeting.
Keyguards
Physical overlays that help isolate pointing, reduce accidental hits, and improve targeting accuracy for touch access.
Robust Vocabulary Systems
Comprehensive AAC systems such as WordPower, TD Snap, and Grid 3 that provide core and fringe vocabulary, grammar, and navigation supports.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
A condition characterized by progressive weakness, fatigue, and decreased speech intelligibility that may require early AAC introduction and voice banking.
Parkinson's disease
A condition involving tremor, bradykinesia, fatigue, and fluctuating motor performance that may require larger targets or dwell modifications.
Mounting
Supports for positioning and safe access to AAC devices, with manufacturers including Daessy and Rehadapt.
Bilingual AAC
AAC systems designed to support home and school languages, culturally relevant vocabulary, and family priorities.
Code Switching
The natural movement between languages that may occur within communication.
Aided Language Input
The best practice of modeling language directly on the AAC system during natural communication opportunities such as making requests or comments.
Plus One Strategy
A method to expand communication by adding 1 meaningful word to the learner’s existing message.
Presuming Competence
The belief that every individual can learn meaningful communication when provided access, instruction, and opportunity.
Major AAC Manufacturers
Key vendors including PRC-Saltillo, Tobii Dynavox, and Smartbox.
Documentation for Funding
Commonly includes AAC evaluation, trial data, Certificate of Medical Necessity (CMN), Assignment of Benefits (AOB), and physician documentation.
Dedicated SGD
Speech-generating devices that offer medical device designation, durability, technical support, and warranty coverage.
