How to respond to danger in EMS?
Plan, observe, react
Plan
-Wear safe clothing
-Prepare equipment for mobility
-Carry a portable radio when possible
-Decide on safety roles (designate an observer)
Observe
-If you observe or suspect danger, call the police.
-Do not enter a scene until it is secured.
-As you near the scene, turn off lights and sirens to avoid a crowd.
-If you notice an unusual silence, be cautious.
Specifically, observe for the following:
-Violence
-Crime scenes
-Alcohol or drug use
-Family members
-Bystanders
-Perpetrators
-Pets
