What does the ECM contain?
connective tissue and basal lamina
What is the basal lamina?
basement membrane
What is the basement membrane made of?
sandwich of connective tissue and epithelial cells
What is the ground substance made of?
proteins and sugars - proteoglycans and GAGs
What are proteoglycans?
sugar-based protein
What are GAGs?
repeating sugar units, negatively charged and attract +ions and water, have a gel-like consistency
What is the main shock absorber in out body with examples?
cartilage - jaw, spine, knee
What is the ECM made of?
ground substance, fibrous structual proteins, and adhesion proteins
What are examples of fibrous structural proteins?
collagen and elastin
What are examples of elastin and explain it?
skin and lungs - ratio changes based on structure
How is collagen made?
in surrounding cells to make matrix arouns it, ribosomes in RER are sent to Golgi - made in lumen of protein to be secreted
What are examples of adhesion proteins?
fibronectin and laminin
What is fibronectin?
links components within matrix and ECM to cell surfaces
What is laminin?
can link integrin to cytoskeletin ex: actin, cell attachment to ECM can be stable (permanent) or temporary (transient) ex: blood vessel (injury with WBCs)
