Patricians

The wealthiest group of Rome citizens . This group made up ten percent of the population and was the ruling class of Rome. This group owned the majority of the land. (artifacts) (1.6 of the population)

This was a group that made ninety percent of the population. This group included artisans, shopkeepers,and owners of small farms.

Plebeians vs Patricians

  • Males of both classes are roman  citizens

  • Both have the right to vote

  • Both pay taxes

  • Both serve in the army

  • Plebeians have less social statues

  • No marriages between the two

  • Plebeians can not hold office

Two individuals chosen form the patrician class that would serve a one year term. Consuls headed the army and ran the government but did not have as much power as the senate.

The word is Latin for “I forbid”. This was a power granted to consuls to reject the decision of the other consul.

These were the judges of Rome that would interpret the law and they were also from the patrician class.

Tribunes

A group of ten Plebeians that were chosen by the Assembly (Council of Plebs) that would serve as a voice within the senate. Over time , the Plebs' power increased in the government and they would be able to veto laws.

Dictator

A leader with complete control. Under Roman law, the dictator was designed as a temporary solution to an extreme problem. The senate would appoint a dictator, but when the danger was over the dictator would give back to the senate.

Cincinnatus

Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus a roman dictator that was an inspiration to george washington because he was given all the power of Rome , but gave it back as soon as the job was done only fifteen days after becoming a dictator.
