  • have nothing inside of them, aren’t very decorated (again, Protestant, kind of a Dutch pride thing)

  • Their churches were also open to the public and also kind of had a civic role - notice there’s a dog walking around, it’s common, used space not just used on Sunday

what is Flanders in the 17th Century like?

  • No longer exists as a political entity (kind of corresponds with Belgium)

  • Part of the Dutch world but has some French influence but at this time was under the control of Spain

    • Spain was Catholic but a lot of people in Flanders were Protestant because of Dutch influence, has some 

  • Stylistic international melting
