Montezuma gave Cortes silver and gold to flex, but Cortes wanted more, so he burned his own ships so that his men couldn’t leave, deciding to conquer the Aztecs. He formed alliances with neighboring tribes with the help for La Malinche, kidnapped/killed Montezuma, got driven out of Tenochtitlan during the Night of Sorrows, and conquered the Aztecs.
