Deposit of Faith

The heritage of faith contained in Sacred Scripture and Tradition, handed on in the Church from the time of the Apostles.

disciples

Followers of Jesus; the word ____ means 'learner.'

dogma

A central truth of Revelation that Catholics are obliged to believe.

Gospel

Literally means 'Good News'; refers to the Good News preached by Jesus and the four written accounts of it.

heresy

An obstinate denial or doubt after Baptism of a truth that must be believed with faith.

Incarnation

The assumption of a human nature by Jesus Christ, meaning 'being made flesh.'

Magisterium

The official teaching authority of the Church, comprised of bishops in communion with the pope.

Sacred Scripture

The written transmission of the Church’s gospel message, preserved and interpreted by the Magisterium.

Sacred Tradition

The living transmission of the Church’s gospel message, preserved and interpreted by the Magisterium.

canon

The official list of inspired books of the Bible, including forty-six Old Testament books and twenty-seven New Testament books.

catechesis

Instruction by word of mouth; the process of religious instruction in the Catholic faith.

evangelist

A preacher of the Gospel; refers to the authors of the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Gentiles

Non-Jews or people not of the Jewish faith.

New Covenant

A description of salvation history culminating in the coming of Jesus Christ.

Septuagint

The oldest complete edition of the Old Testament, a Greek translation of earlier Hebrew texts.

synoptic Gospels

The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, which can be 'seen together' due to their similarities.
