What is a fuel?
They are stores of energy, they need to be burned in oxygen to trasfer their energy e.g. coal, oil and gas
Name the 9 types of energy and meaning?
elastic potential energy - energy stored in compressed or twisted objects
chemical energy- energy stored in fuel due to chemical bonds
Nuclear energy- the energy stored in the nuclei of atoms
Thermal energy- energy stored in objects that are responsible for their tempreture
Light energy- An energy that travels in the form of electromagnetic waves
electrical energy- energy trasferred from the movement of particles like electrons
Sound energy- energy stored by vibration of waves
Gravitational potential energy- energy stored in raised objects
Kinetic energy- energy stored in moving objects
What is an energy store?
An object that allows you to see the energy at he start and end of the transfer
What is the law of conversion of energy
Energy cannot be created of destroyed it can me transferred from one object to another
energy in = energy out
What is efficiency? How do you calculate it?
How good and appliance is at transferring energy to useful forms. The higher the efficiency the lower fuel wastage
efficiency = useful energy output / total energy output
What is the difference between thermal energy and tempreture?
thermal energy is the energy stored in an object
Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold an object is
How is thermal energy and temperature linked?
heating object increases kinetic energy of its particles
An increase is kinetic energy increases the thermal energy store
An increase in thermal energy store increases the temperature
What is Conduction?
The way energy transferred thorough solids. As the particles in the solid are heated, they vibrate more. As the vibration increaces the particles collide more and trasffer their energy to neighboring particles. This continious until thermal equilibrium is reached
What is convection current?
The movement of heated liquids or gases caused by the rise and fall of particles as they heat and cool
Explain convection current
The particles closest to the heat source gain KE causing them to move further away making them less dense and causing them to fall again. This keeps going until thermal equilibrium is reached
