Ganges River
One of the world's longest rivers, it begins in an ice cave in the Himalayas. It flows southeast more than fifteen hundred miles across north central India. It ends its journey by emptying into the Bay of Bengal from multiple months of a 212 mile wide delta on the India-Bangladesh border. Most important river in India because of its fertile delta.
Hinduism
The largest religion in India. Two things are most sacred, cattle and the Ganges.
Delhi
India's second largest city, stands on the Jumna River between Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. A major manufacturing center.
New Delhi
The capital of India. A suburb of Delhi. These two cities are not part of any state but lie in the separate capital territory of Delhi.
Indus River
river that combines with other rivers as it extends the length of Pakistan.
Muhatma Gandhi
Wanted to make peace with the Muslims in India and advocated passive resistance. He was imprisoned many times for his nonviolent protests.
Caste
A class that strictly determines one's social status. Subdivided into hundreds of jatis.

Brahmins
Occupy the highest castes.
Untouchables
Some despised occupations considered so low that they are beneath the caste. Comprise nearly one-seventh of the Indian population.
Reincarnation
The idea that every person follows an endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.
Karma
The total effect of a person's actions.
Gurus
Attract followers to their own teachings.
Taj Mahal
A symbol of Shah Jahan's undying love for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth.
