Independent Variable
A variable that is changed during the experiment by the scientist.
Dependent Variable
A variable that is measured and recorded during the experiment.
Control Variable
A variable that is kept the same during the experiment.
Categorical data
Values which have labels in words, such as favourite animals or colours.
Continuous data
Data that can have any numerical value, occurring within a range such as height.
Discrete data
Data that can only take certain numbers, such as counting students where you cannot have a half student.
SUPL
A checklist for making good graphs: S (Even Scales), U (Labels with Units), P (Plot Points), and L (Draw best-fit Line).
Directly proportional
A relationship where doubling x doubles y and the straight line goes through the origin.
Linear
A relationship where as x increases, y increases in a straight line.
Non-linear
A relationship that is not a line, but a curve.
Inversely proportional
A relationship where as the x variable increases, the y variable decreases.
