greeting
Good morning everyone. My classmates Javier and Renzo, and I, Annel, are going to talk about cultures around the world.
importance of learning about cultural differences
Every country has its own customs, traditions, values, and social rules. Sometimes, actions that seem normal in one country may be considered rude or strange in another. For that reason, learning about cultural differences helps us become more respectful, more open-minded, and better prepared when we travel or meet people from different backgrounds.
intro
In this presentation, we will explore some interesting customs from three countries: China, Japan, and India. Each country has unique traditions that reflect its history and way of life. First, we are going to begin with China, a country with one of the oldest and richest civilizations in the world. Chinese culture is famous for its respect, traditions, family values, and etiquette.
receiving gifts
One important custom in China is related to receiving gifts. When someone offers you a gift, it’s common to refuse it two or three times before accepting it. This doesn’t mean you dislike the gift. Instead, it shows humility, modesty, and good manners. If you had accepted the gift immediately, it would have seemed impolite.
gift advice
So, my advice is that you should politely refuse it once or twice before finally accepting it. You could say: “Oh, you really shouldn’t have. It’s too kind of you, I can’t accept it.”
chopsticks
Another interesting custom is about chopsticks. Chopsticks should never be stuck upright in a bowl of rice. This is because it resembles incense sticks used at funerals, so it may be seen as a symbol of bad luck or disrespect. If the chopsticks had been placed upright in the rice, it would have been considered disrespectful.
chopsticks advice
For that reason, you ought to place them horizontally on the bowl or on a chopstick rest.
conclusion
In addition, family relationships and harmony are highly valued. Chinese traditions teach the importance of respect, humility, and good behavior in daily life.
