The Immortality of the Soul

Socrates says that if the soul is immortal, it learns all the information in the world, as it has all the time to learn everything.

“The soul…has seen both the things here and the ones in Hades”

“It can recollect about virtue and other things, since it knew them before.”

How does the soul ‘see’ things in the way Socrates puts it? Does it mean literal or metaphorical visible perception?
