fugit ille cum ceteris.

He [the boy] fled with the rest

delphinus, quasi invitet et revocet,

The dolphin, as if he were inviting and calling him back,

exsilit mergitur,

leapt up, dived,

variosque orbes implicat expeditque.

and curled and uncurled itself into different shapes.

hoc altero die, hoc tertio, hoc pluribus

This happened the next day, on a third & several other days,

donec homines innutritos mari subiret timendi pudor.

until shame at being afraid came over men brought up on the sea

accedunt et alludunt et appellant,

They approached, played with and called it by name,

tangunt etiam pertrectantque praebentem.

touched it, and even stroked it as it offered itself

"crescit audacia experimento.

" Their boldness increased with trying.

maxime puer, qui primus expertus est,

Most of all the boy who experienced it first

adnatat nanti, insilit tergo,

swam up to it as it swam, leapt onto its back

fertur referturque,

was carried out to sea and was brought back

agnosci se amari putat, amat ipse;

thought he was recognised and loved, and himself loved it;

neuter timet, neuter timetur;

neither feared, neither was feared.

huius fiducia, mansuetudo illius augetur.

the boy's trust was increased as was the dolphin's tameness.

nec non alii pueri dextra laevaque simul eunt

And also other boys went on the right and on the left at the same time,

hortantes monentesque.

encouraging him and warning (the boy).

delphinus alius,

another dolphin ,

"tantum spectator et

comes." merely an observer and companion.
