Ion
An atom that has lost or gained an electron.
Cation
A positively charged ion.
Anion
A negatively charged ion.
Molecule
Two or more atoms of the same element sharing electrons.
Compound
Two or more different elements combined chemically.
Nucleus
The center of an atom containing protons and neutrons, except for hydrogen, which has only a proton.
Mixture
A combination of two substances that are physically blended together.
Suspension
A mixture in which solid particles settle at the bottom; example:blood.
Colloid
A mixture in which particles floating in a liquid will not settle out; example:microbeads in gel.
Solution
A mixture where two or more substances are combined, with one dissolving the other; example:salt water.
