Ion is an atom that has lost or gained an electron

Positively charged ions are called cations

negatively charged ions are called anions

molecule: 2 or more atoms of the same element sharing electrons

compound; 2 or more different elements combines chemically

all elements have protons and neutrons in their nucleus except for hydrogen, it only has a proton

mixture is composed of two substances that are physically blended together

3 types of mixtures:

1. suspension: mixture in which solid particles settle at the bottom; example blood

2. colloid: a mixture in which particles floating in a liquid will not settle out; example microbeads in gel

3. solution: combining two or more things together which one dissolves the other; example salt water
