Samuel de Champlain describes the lives of Huron women and men in the great lakes region (1616)
Champlain emphasized a division of labor, with women being responsible for domestic and agricultural work and men are primarily hunting, fishing, trading, and going to war. His European bias is apparent in this, as his assumptions about gender roles are apparent, commenting on the heavy workload women have and that they have significant autonomy in relationships (multiple suitors, choose their partners, divorce relatively easy). Also comments on premarital and extramarital relationships being socially accepted, and inheritance passes
