What is Newton’s 1st law?
In the absence of any resultant forces, a particle moves with constant velocity v
What is Newton’s 2nd law?
F = ma
How can we define the linear momentum of a particle?
p = mv (linear momentum = mass x velocity)
What is the rate of change of linear momentum equal to?
F = dp/dt
It is equal to the sum of the forces acting on it
What is Newton’s 3rd law?
For every force there is an equal and opposite reaction force
What is an intertial frame?
One in which Newton’s laws hold
What is the standard procedure?
Draw diagram
Identify forces
Apply F = ma
Form differential equation
Solve
Apply initial conditions
Look at what this tells us: what is the shape of the particle path? what is the speed of motion? how far does the particle go? when/where does a given event occur?
