Classical Conditioning
Learning through association where a neutral stimulus becomes linked with a reflexive response
Operant Conditioning
Learning in which behavior is shaped by its consequences (reinforcement or punishment)
Conditioned Stimulus (CS)
Previously neutral stimulus that elicits a learned response
Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS)
Stimulus that naturally triggers a response without learning
Conditioned Response (CR)
Learned response to a previously neutral stimulus
Unconditioned Response (UCR)
Natural, reflexive response to a stimulus
Positive Reinforcement
Adding a stimulus after behavior to increase its frequency
Negative Reinforcement
Removing a stimulus after behavior to increase its frequency
Punishment
Applying or removing a stimulus to decrease behavior
Extinction
Decrease of behavior when reinforcement is no longer provided
Schedules of Reinforcement
Rules determining how often reinforcement is delivered
Primary Reinforcer
Naturally reinforcing stimulus (e.g., food, sex)
Secondary Reinforcer
Learned reinforcer (e.g., money, praise)
Social Reinforcer
Reinforcement through social interaction (e.g., attention, approval)
Functional Analysis
Examination of antecedents and consequences maintaining a behavior
Discriminative Stimulus
Cue signaling that reinforcement is available
Modeling
Learning behavior through observation of others
Shaping
Reinforcing successive approximations toward a target behavior
Premack Principle
Using a high-probability behavior to reinforce a low-probability behavior
Token Economy
System where tokens are earned and exchanged for rewards
Behavioral Contract
Written agreement specifying behavior and reinforcement contingencies
Reciprocity
Mutual exchange of reinforcement between individuals
Behavioral Exchange Theory
Relationship satisfaction based on rewards versus costs
Coercion/Aversive Control
Using negative stimuli to influence another’s behavior
Schema
Core beliefs that influence perception and interpretation
Cognitive Distortions
Inaccurate or irrational thought patterns
ABC Model
Activating event, Beliefs, Consequences framework for understanding emotional responses
Behavioral Family Therapy
Treatment focusing on modifying behavior through reinforcement principles
Behavioral Couples Therapy
Therapy focused on increasing positive exchanges between partners
Functional Family Therapy
Integrative model addressing interaction patterns and cognitions
Rational Emotive Family Therapy
Therapy targeting irrational beliefs using ABC model
Cognitive Family Therapy
Therapy focusing on identifying and modifying schemas
Time-Out
Removing access to reinforcement to decrease behavior
Contingency Contracting
Agreement where both parties specify behavior changes and rewards
Token Economy
Reinforcement system using tokens as rewards
Shaping
Reinforcing gradual steps toward desired behavior
Caring Days
Partners intentionally increase behaviors the other finds rewarding
Love Days
One partner increases positive behaviors without expecting reciprocity
Quid Pro Quo Contract
Behavior change contingent on partner’s behavior
Parallel Contract
Behavior change independent of partner’s behavior
Baseline
Initial measurement of behavior before intervention
In Vivo Intervention
Treatment conducted in the natural environment
Generalization
Transfer of learned behavior to real-life settings
