Qualitative Analysis
A series of tests, both physical and chemical, to identify the presence of specific cations or anions without providing information on their quantities.
Flame Tests
Tests where certain metallic compounds are volatilized in a non-luminous Bunsen flame, producing characteristic colors.
Cation
A positively charged ion which is formed when an atom loses electrons.
Anion
A negatively charged ion which is formed when an atom gains electrons.
Water Solubility Test
Observing the behavior of a salt in water to determine its solubility and possible presence of transition metal cations.
Heat Effect on Salts
Many salts release gases when heated, which can be identified by the odor, color of the gas, and reaction with litmus paper.
Hydrogen Test
A test where hydrogen gas produces a 'pop' sound when ignited.
Complex Ion Formation
The process by which certain ions form complexes by their interaction with ligands.
Amphoteric Hydroxides
Hydroxides that can react with both acids and bases, such as aluminum, zinc, and lead hydroxides.
Colorimetric Reaction with Limewater
A test where carbon dioxide turns limewater cloudy due to the formation of calcium carbonate.
Barium Chloride Test
A test that confirms the presence of sulfate ions via the formation of a white precipitate of barium sulfate.
Brown Ring Test
A test to confirm the presence of nitrate ions, characterized by the formation of a brown ring when iron(II) sulfate is added.
Copper Turning Test
A test to confirm nitrate ions, which liberates brown nitrogen dioxide gas when copper turnings react with concentrated sulfuric acid.
Dilute Acid Reaction with Carbonates
When a carbonate reacts with a dilute acid, it produces carbon dioxide gas, which can be detected by its effect on limewater.
Transition Metals
Elements that can form variable oxidation states and colored compounds, often used in qualitative analysis.
Electrochemical Reaction
A reaction involving the transfer of electrons, often observed in redox reactions during chemical tests.
Ionic Product
The product of the molar concentrations of the ions in a saturated solution, which determines solubility.
Precipitation Reaction
A reaction where an insoluble solid (precipitate) forms from the mixing of two solutions containing dissolved ions.
