Define internal energy.
The total kinetic and potential energy of the particles that form a substance.
Define potential energy.
Energy that relates to the position of particles. Farther apart particles means more energy.
Define kinetic energy.
Energy stored in moving objects. More energy = Faster movement.
What does a state change graph depict?
The gradual state and phase changes of a substance undergoing a physical reaction.
Horizontal sections = Phase changes (melting, evaporation, etc)
Slanted segments = States (solid, liquid, or gas)
Why does the ascension/descension of a state change graph pause during phase changes?
Because the kinetic energy can only increase once the process of breaking intermolecular forces is complete.
