Health Promotion
The process of enabling people to increase control over and improve their health.
Disease Prevention
Stopping health conditions and diseases from happening, which can occur at individual, community, or national levels.
Primary Prevention
Decreasing risk before something develops; examples include immunizations and healthy lifestyle choices.
Secondary Prevention
Screening to detect disease in its early stages.
Tertiary Prevention
Controlling the effects of a health issue to prevent further deterioration.
Quaternary Prevention
Preventing the use of medical interventions that are excessive and unnecessary.
Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)
Conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age affecting a wide range of health outcomes.
Modifiable Risk Factors
Risk factors that can be changed, such as tobacco use, diet, and activity level.
Non-Modifiable Risk Factors
Risk factors that cannot be changed, such as age, sex, race/ethnicity, and family history.
Healthy People 2030
A program identifying public health priorities to improve health and well-being while addressing health disparities.
Self-Care
The practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health, which is an ethical obligation for nurses.
Wellness Assessment
Assessment focusing on healthy behaviors to evaluate a person's overall health status.
Health Literacy
The ability to obtain, process, and understand basic health information needed to make informed health decisions.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy
A therapeutic approach that combines cognitive behavioral therapy with mindfulness strategies.
Motivational Interviewing
A technique used to help clients find intrinsic motivation to achieve their health goals.
Health Risk Appraisal
Assessment that identifies risky behaviors that promote disease.
