What are the two main sections of the human skeleton?
Axial skeleton and Appendicular skeleton.
What is the primary function of the axial skeleton?
To support the central structure of the body and protect vital organs.
How many ribs are there in the human body?
12 pairs of ribs.
What are the major components of the appendicular skeleton?
Major limbs including arms, legs, and the shoulder and pelvic girdles.
What connects bones together in the skeletal system?
Ligaments.
Define 'articulation' in the context of the skeletal system.
An articulation occurs when two or more bones meet to form a joint.
What is the function of the vertebral column?
To protect the spinal cord.
What are the five types of vertebrae in the human spine?
Cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccyx.
What type of bone is longer than it is wide and supports body weight?
Long bone.
What is the role of flat bones?
To protect internal organs such as the brain and heart.
What can be found within the bone marrow?
Red blood cells are produced in the bone marrow.
What are the types of joints based on their movement?
Fibrous (immovable), Cartilaginous (slightly movable), and Synovial (freely movable).
What are examples of synovial joints?
Knee, elbow, wrist, and ankle.
What movement does a hinge joint permit?
Flexion and extension.
What is the main function of the skeletal system?
To provide structure, protect organs, assist in movement, store minerals, and produce blood cells.
