Step 1 making salts practical:
Put 250cm³ sulphuric acid in a beaker
Step 2 making salts practical:
Add copper carbonate until it stops fizzing
Step 3 making salts practical:
Put funnel and filter inside conical glass and pour in copper/acid mixture
Step 4 making salts practical:
Transfer into evaporating basin on top of a large beaker of water, and heat
Step 5 making salts practical:
Reduce volume by 2/3 or until you can see crystals beginning to form
Step 7 making salts practical:
Leave to evaporate by a window, and you will be left with only crystals
Making salts practical equation:
Copper carbonate+sulphuric acid>copper sulphate+water+carbon dioxide
We leave solutions to evaporate by windows when crystallising because:
It slows down the evaporation process, giving us larger crystals
Safety rules in practical
Hair up, protective gear, no eating/drinking.
Stop heating when
Crystals start to appear
Good quality crystals are
Large
At the end of a practical,
Dry the salts in the oven or with paper towels
