Allegory

Characters and actions have meanings outside of themselves

Allusion

reference to a current historical, religious, or literary figure, event, place, text, myth

Analogy

comparison of two things that are alike in some respects

antithesis

juxtaposition of sharply contrasting ideas in balanced or parallel words or phrases

Contradiction

direct opposition between things compared; inconsistency

foil

a person of thing that makes another seem better by contrast

situational irony

a situation or statement characterized by a significant difference between what is expected or understood and what actually happens

verbal irony

speaker says one thing but means the opposite

juxtaposition

intentionally putting two contrasting words/ideas together for effect

paradox

a satirical imitation of a work of art for the purpose of ridiculing its style or subject

persona

voice or figure of the author who tells and structures the arguement or narrative and who may or may not share the values of the actual author

satire

a literary style used to make fun of or ridicule an idea or human weakness
