House Finch
Male: bright red head, fat bill; “dipped in grape jelly”
Female: streaked everywhere; wing bars; fat bill
Song: Rich, meandering warble. Husky

Brown-headed Cowbird
Male: Irridescent, matte brown head
Female: completely pale brown; no streaks
Song: “gurgle-zeee” or “glug-ug-zeee”

Eastern Bluebird
Both M/F with some blue, rufus throat and flanks with white belly
Male: vibrant blue head and wing;
Female: muted blue primaries and tail; can be gray and have white eye ring

Tree Swallow
M/F with bi-colored blue iridescence; dark above, white below; square tail in flight!!
Juvenile females missing blue, dark brown almost black

Brown Creeper
Pale below, dark above, clings like nuthatch, intricate/streak/speckled/mottled; decurved bill; tail attached to tree like woodpecker

Pine Warbler
Many breed and winter
Green back, yellow below, some streaking on flanks, light underparts, white undertail coverts
Yellow eye arcs!!
Song: Loose, bubbly, musical trill

American Kestrel
M/F with double bar on face!
Male: Extensive blue head and wings
Female: Rufus barred wings

Pileated Woodpecker
Striped head, only WP we have with crest
Male: red malar and crest to bill
Female: black malar, less crest

Wood Duck
M/F with shaggy crest, short little bill, intricate face markings; white-edged secondary flight feathers
Male: chestnut breast, bright flank
Call: Female ONLY; “OOO-EEEK!”

Double-crested Cormorant
Snake-like neck, mean face, long hooked bill, fleshy face patch
Crests only during breeding season

Pied-billed Grebe
Tiny, basically no tail, brown overall, black throat, black and white bill

Ring-Billed Gull
Gray gull with white head —> OLIVE FEET, SOME RING ON BILL

Herring Gull
LITTLE RED SPOT ON MANDIBLE, PINK FEET

Rock Dove
Dove w/ dark head, dark tail, variable body pattern, always pink feet and white knob “sear”
