Nurse Practice Act
The law that identifies what nurses are permitted to do within each specific state.
Board of Nursing
The regulatory body responsible for enforcing the Nurse Practice Act.
HIPAA
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which is designed to protect patient privacy.
ANA Code of Ethics
Suggested behaviors for nurses developed by the American Nurses Association.
Advocacy
The act or process of pleading for, supporting, or recommending a cause or course of action on behalf of a patient.
Responsibility
The principle that nurses are answerable for the judgments and actions performed under their control.
Accountability
Being answerable to oneself and others for one’s own choices, decisions, and actions as measured against a standard.
Confidentiality
An element of trust and the expectation that personal information will not be divulged without the patient's consent.
Autonomy
An ethical principle involving respect for the patient's right to choose their own course of action.
Beneficence
The ethical principle of actively doing good and helping others.
Non-Maleficence
The ethical principle of avoiding or preventing injury and harm to a human being.
Fidelity
The ethical principle of honoring promises and staying faithful to the patient.
Veracity
The ethical principle of truth-telling and providing objective reporting.
Justice
The ethical principle of fairness and providing equal treatment for all individuals.
Occupational Therapist
An interprofessional team member who assists clients with Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s), such as using utensils after a stroke.
Case Manager
A professional responsible for after-care resourcing, including follow-up care at home and resources needed after discharge.
Speech Pathologist
A specialist who evaluates and treats issues related to speech, language, and swallowing (dysphagia) after trauma or stroke.

A 5-step clinical framework consisting of Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation.
Clinical Judgement Model (CJM)
A process involving Recognizing Cues, Analyzing Cues, Prioritizing Hypothesis, Generating Solutions, Taking Actions, and Evaluating Outcomes.
SMART Goals
Criteria for creating effective client outcomes: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time Specific.
Therapeutic Communication
Techniques to enhance patient interaction including active listening, eye contact, seeking clarification, and establishing trust.
Objective Data
Measurable or observable data, such as a respiratory rate of 22bpm or skin that is pink, warm, and dry.
