feudalism
A political system in which nobles are granted the use of lands that legally belong to their king, in exchange for their loyalty, military service, and protection of the people who live on the land

lord
The person who granted land in feudalism

manor system
economic plan by which a knight allowed peasants to farm his land in return for food or other payment

knight
A man who received honor and land in exchange for serving a lord as a soldier. He protected the manor.

serf
a peasant who belonged to a manor (almost a slave)

peasant
farmed the land

Coat of Arms
A shield marked with designs of a particular family or group.

moat
a deep, wide ditch surrounding a castle, fort, or town, typically filled with water and intended as a defense against attack.

cathedral
A large and important church

Monastery
Where monks live together in community

monk
A man who has taken a solemn vow to devote his life to prayer and service in a monastery

guild
an organization of people in the same craft or trade

The Crusades
A series of holy wars from 1096-1270 undertaken by European Christians to free the Holy Land from Muslim rule.

Black Death
the epidemic form of bubonic plague experienced during the Middle Ages when it killed nearly half the people of western Europe

emperor
The supreme ruler over Japan. He was looked up to by all of his people, but held little power.

Shogun
Probably the most important and powerful figure in society. He was in charge of military and all the decisions made in this field. He was ranked under the emperor, but held more power.

Daimyo
A great leader who was the most powerful under the shogun. His job was manage a large area of land he was in charge of as well as serving the shogun. The daimyo also paid samurais to protect and work for them.

Samurai
A japanese warrior (similar to a knight) who worked for the daimyo. They brought justice and order to the community and protected their people.

Bushido
Meaning 'Way of the warrior', Bushido was a strict code of conduct the samurai followed.

Warlord
A military commander

chivalry
the qualities idealized by knighthood such as bravery and respect toward women

vassals
lesser lords who pledged their service and loyalty to a greater lord -- in a military capacity

fealty
loyalty

pope
Head of the Roman Catholic Church

hierarchy
a system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority.
fief
land granted by a lord to a vassal in exchange for loyalty and service
Bubonic Plague
The most common form of the Black Death is characterized by fever and painful swellings called buboes.
Yersinia pestis
The scientific name of the bacteria that caused the plague carried by fleas on rats.

scapegoat
a person or group unfairly blamed for something, in this case the plague
