Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO)
Founded in 1964 to represent Palestinians and fight for a Palestinian state.
Led by Yasser Arafat for many years.
Became the main political voice of the Palestinian people.
Six-Day War
1967 war between Israel and Arab states: Egypt, Syria, and Jordan.
Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Sinai Peninsula, and Golan Heights.
Changed Middle Eastern borders and increased Arab-Israeli tensions.
Resolution 242
United Nations resolution passed after the Six-Day War.
Called for Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories and peace in the region.
Became the basis for future peace negotiations.
Yom Kippur War
1973 surprise attack on Israel by Egypt and Syria during Yom Kippur.
Egypt and Syria wanted to regain land lost in 1967.
Led to peace talks between Egypt and Israel.
Camp David Accords
1978 peace agreement between Egypt and Israel.
Negotiated by Jimmy Carter with Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin.
Egypt became the first Arab country to recognize Israel.
Balfour Declaration
1917 British statement supporting a Jewish homeland in Palestine.
Written by Arthur Balfour.
Helped create tensions between Jews and Arabs in Palestine.
Prague Spring (1986)
Reform movement in Czechoslovakia in 1968 seeking greater freedom.
Led by Alexander Dubček.
Soviet Union invaded to stop reforms and maintain control.
Reagan
Ronald Reagan was U.S. president from 1981–1989.
Strong anti-communist leader who increased military spending.
Helped pressure the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Glasnost
Policy introduced by Mikhail Gorbachev meaning “openness.”
Allowed greater freedom of speech and less censorship.
Weakened communist control in the USSR.
Perestroika
Economic reform policy introduced by Gorbachev in the 1980s.
Allowed limited private business and economic restructuring.
Intended to improve the Soviet economy but contributed to the USSR’s collapse.
Gorbachev
Mikhail Gorbachev led the USSR from 1985–1991.
Introduced Glasnost and Perestroika reforms.
Played a major role in ending the Cold War and the Soviet Union.
