how long of a shelf life do platelets have ?
5 days
what temperature are platelets stored at?
22 degrees celcius
what is something special about the way platelets are stored?
they have to be shaken and rotated during storage to prevent them from becoming activated
What is a major probelm about storing platelets at 22 degrees celcius?
possible bacterial contamination
why would someone be given platelts?
thrombocytopenia, clotting disorders, ALL, spleen sequestering platelets, coumadin overdose, chemo pateints
during storage, a varying degree of platelet activation occurs that results in release of “—-” and a decline in “—-”
release of intracellular granules and decline in ATP
Change in platelet storage lesion is attribuitied to decreased pH, ATP, and increased —
lactate
What visual inspection should a tech do before using platelets?
platelet swirl to look for aggregation ( if aggregation, cant use it)
Apheresis, a medical procedure that seperates needed components out of a patient and delivered unwated components back into them, is a way platelets are prepared today. what is the benefit of that?
1 exposure from one pateint instead of pooling platelets toegther from 6 or 7 different sources
What are platelets stored in?
100% plasma medium
What pH do we want to maintain to have the best change of keeping platelets viable?
6.2
Platelets have a shelf life of 5 days, but they are actually only available for 4 days, why is this?
they are held for 24 hours to monitor for bacterial contamination
what is fresh frozen plasma and cryo stored at
-30 degrees celcius
Why would someone need FFP?
replace clotting factors, people who OD’d on blood thinners, liver disease
Why would someone need cryo?
to replace factor 8, 13 and vWF
What is whole blood stored at?
1-6 degrees celcius
Why would a patient need Whole blood?
when patients need multiple components… this minimizes number of patients they are exposed to
