Joints
Also called articulations.
Synarthrotic, Amphiarthrotic, Diarthrotic
Types of joint classification based on the degree of movement possible.
Fibrous joints
Types include syndesmosis, suture, and gomphosis.
Suture
An example of a fibrous joint.
Gomphosis
A type of joint where a tooth root is attached to a jawbone by a periodontal ligament.
Cartilaginous joints
Connected by hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage.
Bursae
Fluid-filled sacs containing synovial fluid.
Menisci
Fibrocartilage discs that divide the joint into two compartments.
Flexion
Type of movement where the angle between two bones decreases.
Extension
Type of movement where the angle between two bones increases.
Synovial joints
Joints with a synovial membrane that secretes synovial fluid.
Dislocation
Displacement of a joint.
Arthritis
A condition where joints are inflamed, swollen, and painful.
Rotational movement
Movement possible in a ball-and-socket joint.
Ligaments
Reinforce the joint capsule and bind articular ends of bones together.
Artificial joints
Built of silicone polymers for small joints and metals for large joints.
