Stuttering
A speech disorder characterized by stops, restarts, and hesitations in speech, affecting about 1 to 2% of the population.
Block
A complete pause in the production of a syllable or word; the airflow stops and the articulators become stuck.
Prolongation
The holding of a consonant or vowel sound for a longer-than-normal time while airflow continues.
Repetition
The replication of a sound, syllable, or word, which can be part-word, whole-word, or phrase repetition.
Circumlocution
Talking around a word or substituting another word for it, often to avoid a difficult word.
Filler word
Words inserted into phrases, such as 'um' or 'uh', that provide a pause in speech.
Secondary behaviors
Physical reactions that may accompany stuttering, including eye blinks and head nods.
Prevalence of stuttering
Approximately 1% of the population currently stutters, while about 5% have stuttered at some point in their lives.
Acquired fluency disorders
Fluency disorders that can emerge from illness, trauma, or psychological trauma affecting speech.
Assessment Protocol
A process involving questions about stuttering to diagnose and decide on therapy approaches.
