What are ionic bonds and are they conductors?
A bond between a metal and a nonmetal where one atom gives up one or more electrons to another atom. They conduct electricity when dissolved.
2
New cards
What are covalent bonds, molecular compounds, are they conductors and what is their goal?
A bond between two, or more, nonmetals where two atoms share a pair of electrons. These bonds are not conductive in any state and their goal is to form a full configuration (octet rule).
3
New cards
What are metallic bonds?
A bond between two metals where electrons are distributed evenly to create a sea of electrons which allows electrons to move easily among the atom.
4
New cards
Is KCl a ionic or molecular bond?
Ionic.
5
New cards
Is PO₂ a ionic or molecular bond?
Molecular.
6
New cards
Is Al₂S₃ a ionic or covalent bond?
Covalent.
7
New cards
Is H₂ a covalent or ionic bond?
Covalent.
8
New cards
9
New cards
Do metallic bonds conduct electricity?
Yes, they conduct electricity as solids.
10
New cards
Do covalent bond conduct electricity?
No, they do not conduct electricity in any form.
11
New cards
Which type of bond has the highest melting point?
Metallic.
12
New cards
Which bond has a low melting point?
Covalent.
13
New cards
What bond has a high melting point, but does not have the highest melting point?
Ionic.
14
New cards
Are metal ions positively or negatively charged? Why?
They are positively charged because they lose electrons
15
New cards
are nonmetal ions positively or negatively charged? Why?
They are negatively charged because they gain electrons.
16
New cards
How many electrons are involved in a single bond?
Two.
17
New cards
How many electrons are involved in a triple bond?
Six.
18
New cards
How do you know the number of valence electrons that an element will have?
Look at the last digit of the group number. (Ignore tranistion elements)
19
New cards
All elements want to meet the octet rule except for Boron and Hydrogen, how many electrons do they want to fill their outer shell?
Boron wants six electrons and Hydrogen wants two.
