Albumin (ALB)

most common blood protein; reflects liver’s ability to produce essential proteins

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP)

enzyme found inside liver cells, marker for biliary disease; enzymes that increase in response to liver inflammation or injury

Alanine transaminase (ALT)

enzyme found inside liver cells; marker for hepatocellular injury; enzymes that increase in response to liver inflammation or injury

Aspartate transaminase (AST)

enzyme found inside liver cells, marker for non-specific liver/muscle damage; enzymes that increase in response to liver inflammation or injury

Direct bilirubin (DBILI)

measures conjugate, not unconjugated, bilirubin; evaluate liver clearance and bile flow

Total bilirubin (TBILI)

byproduct of heme breakdown in the liver; evaluate liver clearance and bile flow

Total protein (TP)

all proteins circulating in blood (predom. albumin); reflects liver’s ability to produce essential proteins
