Anorexia nervosa
An eating disorder in which people fail to maintain body weights that are normal for their age and height and have fears of becoming fat, distorted body images, and amenorrhea.
Restricting type
A subtype of anorexia nervosa where weight loss is accomplished primarily through dieting, fasting, and/or excessive exercise, without recurrent binge eating or purging in the last 3 months.
Binge-eating/purging type
A subtype of anorexia nervosa where, during the last 3 months, the individual has engaged in recurrent episodes of binge eating or purging behavior.
Bulimia nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by uncontrolled eating followed by behaviors to prevent weight gain from the binges.
Binge-eating disorder
An eating disorder where people compulsively overeat but do not engage in compensatory behaviors for the overeating.
Obesity
A condition of being significantly overweight, defined by a BMI of 30 or over.
Hypothalamus
The part of the brain that plays a central role in regulating eating and sends messages to cease eating when nutrient levels are full.
Dichotomous thinking
A cognitive style common in people with eating disorders where they judge things as either all good or all bad.
Bariatric surgery
An option for extremely obese people with a BMI of 40 or over and at least one severe health problem, resulting in weight loss of 25−30.
Interpersonal therapy (IPT)
A type of psychotherapy where the patient develops strategies to solve problems.
