The European countries became involved in the war because of the alliances they had formed with each other in the event of war- and war was now upon them!!!!
Who was Serbia allied to… and who was allied to the ally of Serbia?
Serbia was allied to.. Russia who was allied to…France who was allied to… Britain who was allied to Belgium.
Who was Austria Hungary allied to.. and who was allied to the ally of Austria Hungary?
Austria-Hungary was allied to.. Germany, who really disliked… Britain and Russia and France!

How was the plan intended to work, what did the Germans want to avoid?
Germany created a plan to avoid fighting on 2 fronts- France and Russia- at the same time.
What were the Germans hoping would happen?(assumptions)
-That they could bypass France’s defences by attacking via Belgium.
-That the German army could swiftly defeat the French army
-That the Russians would be slow to organise and move their own army.
-That Britain would not enter the war.
Why did the plan fail?
-Belgium managed to slow the German army down, which helped France move their army to the Belgium border.
-The UK declared war on Germany, honouring the Treaty of London signed in 1839.
-Russia mobilised their troops in 10 days.
What was the Treaty of London?
It stated that Belgium should be a neutral country and was signed in 1839.
What was the Kaisers assumptions about the Treaty of London?
That it was just a “scrap of paper” and that Britain would not enter the war because of it.
