What is non-specific urethritis?
inflammation of urethra
triggered by bacteria picked up during sex
Common causes?
chlamydia
trauma
chemical irritation
Symptoms of non-specific urethritis?
white or cloudy discharge from penis
burning sensation when urinating
itching
irritation
tip of penis irritated and sore
Diagnosis?
swab of urethra
urine test
look for WBCs or presence of bacteria
Management of non-specific urethritis?
doxycycline100mg BD for 7 days
azithromycin 1g initial dose followed by 500mg daily for 2 days (alternative).
Sexual advice?
sexual partners should be tested and treated - even if no symptoms present
avoid sexual intercourse until treatment completed
usually 7 days
