What can we use to clone a rare plant?

Tissue cultures

2
New cards

When cloning plants via tissue cultures, why is the tissue sterilised?

To remove pathogens

3
New cards

When using tissue cultures, what is in the growth medium so that the plant can actually grow?

Nutrients and growth hormones

Steps in cloning via tissue cultures

  1. Tissue is removed from plant.

  2. Tissue is sterilised to kill pathogens.

  3. Prepare the sterile growth medium.

  4. Place plant in medium, the plant hormones will stimulate the growth of roots and shoots.

  5. Extract the plant and put it in sterile soil.

5
New cards

What do the plant hormones stimulate?

The growth of roots and shoots

6
New cards

adv of using tissue cultures

  • can be made quickly.

  • Requires little space.

  • Grown all year round.

7
New cards

What are the two ways of cloning plants?

Tissue cultures

Cuttings

8
New cards

What do we use to stimulate the growth of roots on the cuttings

Rooting powder

Cloning

10
New cards

Advantages of using plant cuttings instead of tissue cultures

  • more simple than tissue cultures.

  • Plants produced quickly and cheaply

Cuttings steps

  1. Cut off buds/ shoots of plant- “cuttings”

  2. Apply rooting powder to stimulate growth of roots.

  3. Pot it- plant will then grow roots and shoots.

  4. Transfer to bigger pot—> this is a cloned plant.
