Language Disorder
Impaired comprehension and/or use of spoken, written, and/or other symbol systems.
Components of Language Disorders
Includes form (phonology, morphology, syntax), content (semantics), and function (pragmatics/social communication).
Receptive Language Disorder
A disorder that affects the understanding of spoken or written language.
Expressive Language Disorder
A disorder that affects the ability to express oneself through spoken or written language.
Phonology
The study of the sound system of a language.
Morphology
The study of the structure of words and their meaningful components.
Syntax
The set of rules that dictate the structure of sentences in a language.
Semantics
The study of meaning in language.
Pragmatics
The aspect of language relating to the social use of language and communication.
ASHA
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, which provides guidelines and definitions for speech and language disorders.
